How to convert an audio file
Open an audio file
Choose one file up to 150 MB. The listed extensions are a starting point; your browser must also be able to read the audio inside.
Choose a format and output level
Choose an available format. For MP3 and similar compressed formats, pick a suitable bitrate; WAV and FLAC do not use bitrate.
Check the converted file
Click “Convert to…” and preview the result. If you need it in another app, open it there before deleting the original.
Choose a format for your next step
Conversion re-encodes audio. A higher bitrate or converting a compressed file to WAV/FLAC cannot restore detail already lost in the source.
| You need | What to do | Check the result |
|---|---|---|
| Easy sharing and playback | Choose MP3 if available; start at 192 kb/s, then lower or raise the bitrate based on file size and what you hear. | Preview it, compare file size and open it in the receiving app. |
| Further editing | Choose WAV or FLAC if your editor accepts it; the bitrate level does not apply to these formats. | Open it in your editor; the file may be larger than a compressed version. |
| An app requires a specific format | Choose M4A, AAC, OGG or OPUS if the required format is available. OGG here uses Opus. | Try the file in the target app; a matching extension alone does not guarantee codec support. |
If a file will not open or export
- Input file is rejected
- AIFF, AMR and WMA are unavailable here. If a listed extension still fails, its internal codec may be unreadable; try another MP3 or WAV file.
- Output is disabled or export fails
- Choose an available format or another output level. For a large file, try a smaller one on a device with enough memory and keep the tab open until conversion finishes.
